Oral Appliances
Oral Appliances
Oral appliances refer to devices that are worn in the mouth to treat various dental and medical conditions. They are custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth and can be used to treat a variety of issues such as snoring, sleep apnea, bruxism (teeth grinding), TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders and more.
The process of getting an oral appliance typically involves the following steps:
- Consultation: The first step is to consult with a dentist or a sleep specialist to determine if an oral appliance is the appropriate treatment for your condition.
- Examination: The dentist or sleep specialist will examine your mouth, jaws, and airway to assess your condition and determine the appropriate type of oral appliance for you.
- Impression:The dentist or sleep specialist will take an impression (mold) of your teeth and jaws to create a custom-fit oral appliance.
- Fabrication:The impression will be sent to a dental lab where the oral appliance will be fabricated, typically taking a couple of weeks.
- Fitting:Once the oral appliance is ready, the dentist or sleep specialist will fit it in your mouth and make any necessary adjustments for comfort and effectiveness.
- Follow-up:After the fitting, the dentist or sleep specialist will schedule follow-up appointments to check on the fit and effectiveness of the oral appliance.
It’s important to note that oral appliances are not a one-time solution and need to be adjusted or replaced periodically as the patient’s bite and jaw changes over time. Regular check-ups with the dentist or sleep specialist are important to ensure the proper fit and effectiveness of the oral appliance and to detect any issues early on.
