Root Canal
Root Canal
A root canal is a dental procedure in which the infected or damaged pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels) is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. The procedure is typically done to save a damaged or infected tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.
The process of a root canal typically involves the following steps:
- The dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic.
- A small hole is drilled into the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
- Using small instruments, the dentist will remove the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth.
- The pulp chamber and root canals are then cleaned and disinfected.
- Once the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, a filling is placed to seal the root canals and the hole in the top of the tooth is sealed with a filling or a crown.
- After the procedure, the tooth may be sore for a few days, but the pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
It’s important to note that a root canal procedure is typically done to save a damaged or infected tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. It’s a highly effective treatment and most teeth that have had root canals can last a lifetime with proper care.
