Scaling and Root Planning
Scaling and root planning are dental procedures that are used to treat periodontal (gum) disease. Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from above and below the gum line, while root planning smooths the tooth’s root surfaces, making it more difficult for plaque to reattach to the tooth’s surface.
The process of scaling and root planning typically involves the following steps:
- Initial Consultation: Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to determine if scaling and root planning is the appropriate treatment for your periodontal disease. They may also take X-rays to get a better look at the health of your teeth and gums.
- Anesthesia: Scaling and root planning is usually done under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. The area around the teeth being treated will be numbed with a shot of local anesthesia.
- Scaling: The dentist or hygienist will use hand instruments or ultrasonic devices to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. They will work carefully to remove all of the plaque and tartar without causing damage to the tooth enamel or the gums.
- Root Planning: Once all of the plaque and tartar have been removed, the dentist will use specialized instruments to smooth the root surfaces of the teeth. This will make it more difficult for plaque to reattach to the tooth's surface in the future.
- Follow-Up Visits: Scaling and root planning is typically done on multiple visits to the dentist, with the goal of removing all plaque and tartar and smoothing the root surfaces. Your dentist will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress and ensure that the disease is under control.
- After Care Instructions: After the procedure, your dentist will give you instructions on how to take care of your teeth, including how to properly brush and floss to prevent plaque buildup, and may also recommend further treatment such as antibiotics or periodontal surgery.
- Maintenance: Scaling and root planning are not a one-time treatment and may need to be repeated as part of ongoing maintenance to keep gum disease under control. Regular check-ups and cleanings are also important to prevent the recurrence of gum disease.
It’s important to note that scaling and root planning are deep cleaning procedures and may cause some discomfort, sensitivity or bleeding for a few days after the procedure. Following the after care instructions provided by the dentist is important for a speedy recovery.
