Tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which a tooth is removed from the jawbone. The procedure is typically done when a tooth is damaged or decayed beyond repair, when there is not enough room in the mouth for all the teeth, or when a tooth is impacted (stuck in the jawbone and unable to fully erupt into the mouth).
The process of tooth extraction typically involves the following steps:
- The dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic.
- Depending on the type of extraction, the dentist may use an instrument called an elevator to loosen the tooth from the socket.
- A pair of forceps is then used to gently rock the tooth back and forth to loosen it from the socket.
- Once the tooth is loose, the dentist will remove it from the socket.
- After the tooth is removed, the dentist will place a gauze pad in the socket to stop any bleeding.
- The dentist will then provide instructions for post-extraction care, including how to manage pain and swelling, and how to keep the extraction site clean.
It’s important to note that the recovery time varies depending on the type of extraction and the individual’s health. Simple extractions may take only a few days to heal, while more complicated extractions may take a few weeks.
